Schonbrunn Palace

The Summer Palace of the Habsburgs is likely to come high on most must-see lists. Often dubbed the Austrian Versailles, Schonbrunn is a sumptuous confection that came into its own during the reign of Empress Maria Teresa (1745-80). Packed during the Summer months, Schonbrunn has dozens of rooms that are open to the public, replete with furniture that was enjoyed by Franz Joseph and his family. There's some truth in the fact that Europe's imperial palaces can be a bit samey - there's little room for eccentricity here - but the gardens and zoo provide two extra perks that make a visit more than worthwhile.
