Lost Mozart Allegro Breathes Again

The 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth may have proved something of an overload for many Viennese, following a year of non-stop hype, but Austria has rounded off the jubilee in style.

It's not often that you get a bona fide Mozart premiere these days, but that's exactly what happened in Salzburg on Friday.

A privileged group of music lovers lapped up a lost Mozart allegro as 2006 bid us farewell. A single harpsichordist performed the piece, which was discovered by chance between the pages of an old notebook.

The short allegro is believed by many to have been written when the maestro was a mere boy.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died aged 36 in 1791, yet 20 million hits have already been made on a new website showcasing the composer's works.
