Over a million dollars worth of Faberge eggs have been stolen from a palace in Vienna. The jewel-encrusted treasures, which were celebrated in the James Bond classic Octopussy disappeared late Tueday night from the baroque Harrach Palace.
Police are hoping that fingerprints and DNA samples might help to root out the culprits, but as of yet there are few leads.
Some thirty eggs were stolen in the heist, as well as a painting and some porcelain vases. However, the Harrach Palace is not in fact a private residence these days - it serves as a venue for business events art exhibitions.
The first Faberge Egg was created as a one-off Easter commission for Tsar Alexander III. The Tsar's wife was so delighted by the prezzie that the eggs became an annual tradition at the Romanov Court.
