The Congress Uncorked

A new book has just been published about one of the most colourful episodes in Vienna's history. Rites of Peace: The Fall of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna lifts the lid on the shenanigans of the famed peace conference of 1814-15.

Author Adam Zamoyski has won over reviewers for the second time with his portrait of Bonaparte's downfall, following on from his best-selling 1812: Napoleon's Fatal March on Moscow.

Britain's The Sunday Times described the new tome as 'masterly', whilst The Mail concluded that it was 'a triumphant feast of a book.'

Zamoyski, an emigree Pole brought up in Britain, cut his literary teeth with histories of his native Poland. He is descended from one of the more ill-starred diplomats at the Congress, Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, whose plans to resuscitate Poland proved unpopular amongst the victorious powers.
