Vandals At Viennese Cemetery

Vienna's grandest cemetery, the Zentralfriedhof, was subjected to a bout of vandalism in the wake of the New Year.

About 101 graves were abused, although the attacks were rather haphazard, and wholesale destruction of tombs was not achieved.

The vandalism included some 25 Jewish graves, but the attacks are not believed to be politically motivated. There were no slogans or symbols daubed on any of the tombstones.

Police are investigating the matter, but no information has yet come to light on those responsible for the crime.

Zentralfriedhof was opened in 1874, and some three million people have been buried there. Illustrious residents include Brahms, Schubert and Schoenberg.
