Austrian animal rights activists have brought a halt to experiments testing pigs ability to survive avalanches. The tests, conducted in the Alps to fathom how long humans could endure in an air pocket, had drawn a hail of condemnation from green groups both in Austria and abroad.

Anesthesiologist Peter Paal stopped his work on Friday 15th January, claiming that none of the pigs had been harmed, as they had been sedated and given an anesthetic prior to the experiments.
